LED Lighting - 7 Things You Should Know

Advances in LED technology have made it a realistic option for most homes and offices. LED lamps to come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, so it is possible to find an alternative to LEDs for almost all older devices. So why should you consider switching to LED technology in your home?

We look at the main reasons why LED Lights is now considered the most environmentally friendly lighting option and discuss other things to know before making the purchase.

1. Energy saving
The main reason for switching to LEDs is that they consume much less energy than all previous bulbs. We already know how wasteful incandescent bulbs are and many of us have started using CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) instead. LED bulbs use even less energy, resulting in significant energy savings once you've added them to an entire household. For the old halogen spots, replacing them with equivalent LEDs will allow you to save a lot of money on your electricity bill.

2. Instant light
One of the irritations of CFLs is the time it takes them to warm up. You can expect at least a minute of very dull light before it reaches its full power, sometimes even flickering. LEDs reach full illumination as soon as they are lit

3. Effective
Old incandescent bulbs release a lot of heat, which contributes significantly to the build-up of heat in the house: it's not a problem in winter, but in summer, it can warm the room uncomfortably, or increase your air conditioning bills if you have it. LEDs are much more efficient with very low operating temperatures, thus avoiding heat build-up.

4. Mercury-free
The downside of CFLs is that it contains mercury and toxic chemicals that are toxic to humans and animals. The ruptures of these bulbs in the home release small amounts of mercury into your environment. The safe disposal of used CFLs is a bigger problem because if they ended up in landfills, all the mercury could end up in our groundwater. LEDs do not contain mercury. Now the LED Lights contain some other heavy metals that should ideally be recycled, but they are not toxic.

5. Lumens
So how do you know the power of LED light you buy? We are all used to choosing between 60Watt and 100W bulbs. These rated powers are completely different from the power of LEDs. A new measure of lumens (the amount of light emitted) has therefore been launched. If you used a 100W bulb in the past, you now want to look for a 1750 lumens LED. For an equivalent of 60W, opt for an 890 lumens LED bulb.

6. Quality brands
The success of LED bulbs has given rise to a range of lower-quality, cheaper and so tempting versions. These, however, invariably fail to live up to the long-term claims of well-known brands. A quality LED should last 10 years or more. Its cost savings come from its longevity, so these cheap imitations that fail after two years don't save you money in the long run. Opt for well-known brands such as Philips, Edison, Cree, and Bridgelux. These are more expensive to purchase but save money several times in their lifetime.

7. Direct replacement
There are many varieties of LED bulbs designed to directly replace old-fashioned bulbs and halogen ceiling lights. Others require the installation of transformers. If you don't know exactly what LED Light you need, talk to an LED lighting specialist, who will advise you on the best-performing options for your needs.
